The Hurricane Fire Department Carnival begins today and runs nightly from 6:30 to 11 p.m. through Saturday at Hurricane High School. For more information, call 304-562-5663.

The Huntington Area Hiking Club will host a group hike at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Barboursville Park. Meet at the picnic shelters at the top of the first hill. For more information, contact GHPRD recreation programmer Stacey Leep at 304-696-5954 or sleep@ghprd.org.

The Randolph Street Baptist Church on Charleston's West Side will be host a cookout at 5:30 p.m. Friday. There will be free food, music and games for people to enjoy. The event will be at the parking across from Sherwin Williams on Randolph Street.

The Charleston Marriott Town Center has accepted a community service challenge to create 200 survival kits to be donated to the YWCA Sojourner's Shelter for Women and Families and the Charleston men's shelter. Through the month of June, the Marriott, 200 Lee St. E., will serve as a drop-off location for the items needed to assemble the survival kits. On July 1, a team of volunteers will assemble the kits and distribute them to the shelters.

The following items are needed to assemble the survival kits: all-in-one shampoo/body wash, deodorant, toothbrush/toothpaste, lip balm, hand lotion, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, can opener, first-aid kit (small/travel size), tissues, cough drops, chewing gum. Saturday night ballroom dances for 2015 will be held on the following dates: July 11, Aug. 15, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. All dances will be held at 7 p.m. in the Junior League Ballroom, 617 9th Ave., Huntington. Cost is $10 per person.

An Upward Basketball Camp is offered from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday, July 5 to 8, at First Baptist of Kenova for boys and girls ages 3 to those going into eighth grade this fall.

Trained instructors will work to develop shooting technique, free throw shooting, rebounding, ball handling, passing and defensive skills.

Cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt, basketball, water bottle and poster.

The 65th Annual West Virginia Mountain State Gospel Singers Convention will take place July 19 to 23 in Nicholas County. All singers and spectators are welcome. There will be free camping during the sing, though donations will be accepted.

The event begins with choir singing at 7 p.m. nightly July 19-23.

At 1 p.m. July 24 there will be youth choir performances, followed by open mic night at 7 p.m.

Open mic continues 1:45 to 6:45 p.m. July 25, followed by performances by quartets/trios only at 7 p.m.

Sunday morning worship will be 10 a.m. July 26, followed by another open mic session from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
