The West Virginia Generals brought home the gold last week, winning the national championship in basketball.

Haven't heard of that team? They've been outplaying their opponents for years.

The West Virginia Generals are the 75- to 80-year-old competitors from Charleston that competed and won the Senior Olympics in St. Paul, Minn.

There are 15 teams in the 75 to 80 age group. The Generals knocked off teams from Oregon, Georgia, Mississippi, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Minnesota (twice).

"It's a pretty good honor for the state of West Virginia," team captain Harold Vealey, at the young age of 77, told Gazette-Mail sports writer Chuck McGill.

Vealey's teammates in the 3 on 3 competition are Stonewall Jackson High School graduates Fred Duffield, Sam Dye, Don Griffith and Charleston High graduate Dennis Parker.

"We're all about the same height and we always play against taller guys," Vealey said. "We're all in pretty good shape. We read each other's minds."

Bringing home the gold in any competition is tough. Hats off to Duffield, Dye, Griffith, Parker and Vealey for representing West Virginia well.
