Community briefs for July 14, 2015

The Robert S. Garnett SCV Camp 1470 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will meet at the Dunbar Public Library at 7 p.m. Thursday. The recent events of the Confederate flag removal in South Carolina and other news will be discussed. The public is invited to attend. Current, former and prospective members are encouraged.

The regular meeting of the Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority Board of Members will be at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at the KVRTA offices, 1550 4th Ave.

A free clothing giveaway for kids will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Teays Valley Church of God, 6979 Teays Valley Road in Scott Depot. For more information, call 304-757-9222.

Friends of the Lower Greenbrier River will sponsor RiverFest, a river celebration day, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The event will be at the Greenbrier River Campground on Rt. 63, outside of Alderson. Admission is $20 for adults, and $10 for children 12 and under. A picnic buffet will be provided by Burnout BBQ. Festivities will include games, a rubber ducky race, a silent auction and music by celebrated local musician Gyasi Heus.

Literacy West Virginia Volunteer Tutor Training, RESA 3, will be July 24 and 25 at the RESA 3 location, 501 22nd St., Dunbar. Hours are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on July 24 and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 25. Both days are required. A light dinner will be served July 24, and lunch will be served July 25. Trainer will be Pam Young. The South Charleston Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will have its regular and annual meeting at 4 p.m. July 20 at the administrative offices at 520 Goshorn St., South Charleston.

Al-Anon/Alateen groups have open and free support groups for those who have loved ones and friends that have an addiction. Al-anon meetings are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1105 Quarrier St.; noon on Wednesdays at the Kanawha County Day Report Center, 900 Christopher St.; and 7 p.m. Thursdays in the Edgewood area at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 819 Somerset Dr.

Alateen meetings are for teens who deal with the alcoholism and/or drug addiction of a family member or friend. They meet at 7 p.m. Thursdays in the Edgewood area at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 819 Somerset Dr., and noon on Fridays at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier St., Room 200. The Legacy Study Group meets at 7 p.m. Sundays at First Presbyterian Church, 508 Second Ave., South Charleston. For information on WV Al-anon, call 304-345-7420.
