Three men were found dead in a Mercer County home Friday evening and investigators are unsure how they died, the Mercer County Sheriff's Department said.

The three men, who were all related, were found by a neighbor in a home on Tabernacle Hill Road in Montcalm, Sgt. S.A. Sommers of the sheriff's department said.

"There were suspicious circumstances," Sommers said. "We were unable to determine from the scene investigation the cause of death, so we're waiting for autopsy results."

The bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner's office for autopsies.

Two of the men were brothers, Sommers said, while the third was an uncle or great-uncle to both. At least one of the men lived in the house where all three were found, Sommers said.

The youngest was in his late 30s, and the oldest was about 50, Sommers said.

A neighbor discovered the bodies after noticing that the men had not been seen in a few days and walking on the property to let a dog back in the house, Sommers said.

He said the men had been dead for "several days" by the time they were found.

"Because of the decomposition of the bodies, we were unable to determine the cause of death or any injuries for that matter," Sommer said. Pressed for more specifics, he said, "That's about the safest way I can put it."

The lead investigators on the case are Detective Sgt. L.B. Murphy and Detective J.D. Ellison.
