Ethel Mae Burnett

Ethel Mae Burnett, 92, of Charleston, passed from this life on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016. She was born at Wolf Creek, Monroe County, on Aug. 16, 1923 to the late John Elmer and Myrtle McNeil Hinkle. She received her first eight years of education in a one-room school in Monroe County and graduated from Union High School in 1942. In later years, after raising her children, she achieved her lifetime dream and became a nurse, working in Summersville and Braxton County hospitals. Ethel was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served numerous callings there.

Also preceding her in death were her two husbands, Leroy Short and Marlan Burnett; daughters, Judy Kay Erskine and Margaret Ann Shaver; son, Darrell Gene Shaver; brothers, Russell Hinkle and Luther "Lute" Hinkle; and sister, Margaret McComas.

Surviving are her son, William "Bill" Shaver and his wife, Jane, of Florida; stepchildren, William M. Burnett and his wife, Freddie Ann, of Crestwood, Ky., Ruth Yarbrough of Holly Hill, S.C., and Steve McCue of Summersville; son-in-law, John Erskine of Lewisburg; daughter-in-law, Linda Shaver of Chesapeake, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends; and her daily companion, her cat, Toby.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bollinger Funeral Home, 420 Lee St. W., Charleston. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity or church of your choice in Ethel's honor.
