If you haven't heard, the state of West Virginia is sending a collegiate football team to the national championship game next Saturday.

The Shepherd University Rams, a member of the NCAA Division II Mountain East Athletic Conference, is 13-0 and will face 14-0 Northwest Missouri State Bearcats at 4 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo.

It's the first trip ever to a national championship game for the Rams, while the Bearcats are seeking their second national championship in three years.

Shepherd's Rams tore through their 2015 schedule, outscoring opponents by an average score of 39-17. Their closest game was a thrilling 34-32 semi-final win over perennial Divison II power Grand Valley State in Shepherdstown last Saturday.

If the Rams bring home the trophy, it will be the first football national championship for a West Virginia team since the Marshall Thundering Herd went 15-0 and won the NCAA Division 1-AA championship in 1996.

It should be noted that football teams in NCAA Division II, Division III and the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly 1-AA) actually play a real tournament to select their national champion, something the NCAA still hasn't correctly figured out how to do for its "Bowl Championship Series."

Win or lose on Saturday, hats off to the Shepherd Rams for representing West Virginia in the national championship.
