n Mount Hope Police shot and killed a man when responding to a stabbing on Monday night, according to WVNS. Police arrived at a home in Mount Hope and found an intoxicated man that allegedly pointed a gun at officers, State Police said. Police fired several shots at him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two stabbing victims were taken to a hospital.
n West Virginia ranks first for the percent of adults in the state who use tobacco compared to the rest of the country, and 24th for the rate of spending on tobacco use prevention compared to the rest of the nation, according to a report cited by The Register-Herald. The report, "Broken Promises to Our Children: A State-by-State Look at the 1998 Tobacco Settlement 17 years Later," was released by a coalition of tobacco prevention groups that advocate for an increase in prevention funding and a higher tax on cigarettes.
n The Berkeley County Day Report Center should open by mid-January, according to The Journal. Currently, many Berkeley County residents travel to Jefferson County for services.
n On Monday, Bridgeport City Council passed the final reading of an ordinance to impose a 1 percent sales tax, The Exponent Telegram reported. The money is allocated for the construction, operation and maintenance of a recreation center.
n The West Virginia Hospital Association Board of Trustees recently approved a list of guidelines for prescribing opiates, according to MetroNews. The board is advising providers to limit the number of pain pills prescribed, and only give painkiller prescriptions to those with government-issued IDs.
