n Laid off coal miners are turning to jobs in the transportation sector more than any other industry, WVVA reports. Workforce West Virginia told the TV station that electrical and power line construction is also a frequent new career for the miners.
n A former West Virginia State Police trooper was sentenced Wednesday for selling oxymorphone to a confidential informant, according to The Register-Herald. Christopher Lee Saunders, 43, of Beckley, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.
n An Oak Hill man was sentenced to life in prison without mercy for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman. According to The Register-Herald, the victim said that 48-year-old Thomas Gene Carter never showed mercy to her. "We all have to live with what happened here," she said. "I'm sure you have nightmares because I have plenty. The image of you down in my face telling me you are going to kill me has never gone away."
n The Monongalia County Sheriff's Department will not be equipping all cruisers with cameras because of inadequate funds, Sheriff Al Kisner told The Dominion Post. The agency was recently denied a grant after deciding to replace the current cameras because of poor quality.
n After a former trooper and his wife were killed in Pocahontas County, and their grandson charged with murder, State Police tell the Pocahontas Times to remember to check on their elderly family members. "Frequently, please," said Sgt. Herby Barlow. Police have said the slayings did not occur the day the bodies were found.
n A Clarksburg police officer resigned after facing disciplinary action for failing to respond to a sexual assault call, according to The Exponent Telegram. The judge has also said he may toss the photo identification of the alleged perpetrator, 37-year-old John Lee Perrine II, of Buckhannon, because police didn't closely follow the state's Eyewitness Identification Act that sets standards for photo line-ups.
