A woman drowned in Lincoln County early Saturday morning after the car she was traveling in attempted to cross a creek and got stuck in high water, the West Virginia State Police said.

Katherine Runyon, 48, was one of four people in a Mercury Cougar that tried to cross high water on Big Harts Creek Road, near Harts, at about 2 a.m. Saturday, State Police Cpl. G.H. Ellis said.

When the car got stuck, all four exited the vehicle, but Runyon came up missing, Ellis said.

A call went in to emergency responders. The State Police and several Lincoln County fire departments responded, with swift water rescue teams, Ellis said.

They found Runyon's body seven hours later, at about 9 Saturday morning. It was a mile downstream in Big Harts Creek. The other three passengers were not injured, Ellis said.
