HUNTINGTON - James Stepp scored 20 points and Brandon Taylor added 17 as Division II Newberry stunned Marshall 101-89 in an exhibition game Sunday at Cam Henderson Center.
The Wolves, who were eager to run with the Thundering Herd, led by as many as 20 points twice in the second half. The Herd got within 90-85, but was unable to close the gap further.
James Kelly did not play for the Herd, which started walk-ons Noah Frampton and Brett Bowling.
Newberry, 20-10 last year, took advantage of MU's 10-of-39 shooting from 3-point range. The Wolves were much better, hitting 12 of 27 attempts.
For the longest stretch, the Wolves held a rebounding advantage and a big advantage in points off turnovers. In the first half, the Wolves scored 20 points off 14 MU turnovers.
Ryan Taylor scored 14 points and Austin Loop had 13 to lead the Herd, while Terrance Thompson led all rebounders with 17.
Marshall begins its season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tennessee.
