Edward Allan Gunter, 66, passed away at Hubbard Hospice House after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015.

Ed was born June 10, 1949, the eldest son of Harry and Ida Gunter, who preceded him in death. He grew up on Charleston's West Side, and remained close with many of his childhood friends. Ed graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1967 and attended West Virginia State College. He worked in the HVAC field for several years before starting Best Heating and Air Conditioning, which he owned and operated for 25 years. Ed was retired at the time of his death, but was frequently consulted for his vast knowledge and experience.

Ed married Peggy Ellen Kees in 1971. They celebrated their 44th anniversary only two days before his death. In addition to Peggy, Ed will be forever missed by his daughter, Alison (Gunter) Flowers and her husband, Adam; his son, Todd Gunter; his granddaughter, Delilah Flowers; and his brothers, Keith (Doug) Gunter of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Jeff Gunter of Charleston.

All who knew Ed would describe him as a larger-than-life personality with an offbeat sense of humor. He was ready to help a friend with any need at the drop of a hat. He was a hands-on Grandpa who loved his only grandchild, Delilah, very much and enjoyed sharing his love of nature and playing with her. He was an animal lover and will be sadly missed by his pets, Dottie, Peanut and Lil Kitty. He enjoyed tinkering around the house and yard, liked to bird watch, was an avid sportsman and loved to work with wood. He could draw up plans and build just about anything his wife asked him to build.

Ed's final request was to be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at Unity of Kanawha Valley, 804 Myrtle Road, Charleston, beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, followed by a light dinner in the church Activity Room. The Rev. Sky Kershner will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ed's name to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, 1248 Greenbrier St., Charleston, WV 25311.
