1 - The West Virginia Mountaineers rank No. 1 nationally in a pair of defensive-driven statistics: scoring defense and turnover margin. The former is a result of WVU's average of 7.7 points allowed, while the latter is boosted by 11 turnovers forced and only two committed.
6 - West Virginia has six wins against top 25 opponents under coach Dana Holgorsen. WVU won two in 2011, two in 2012, one in 2013 and one last season. Overall, Holgorsen teams have lost six of seven against nationally ranked opponents. This week's opponent, Oklahoma, is No. 15 in the AP poll.
7 - WVU has been stingy on fourth down. The Mountaineers are among eight teams who have not allowed a fourth-down conversion, but WVU's number is extraordinary in comparison. Opponents are 0 for 4 against Western Michigan's defense, the most opportunities without allowing a conversation other than West Virginia. Opponents are 0 for 7 against WVU.
9 - West Virginia has intercepted nine passes through three games, which is tied for the nation's lead among Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Three other teams share the lead with WVU: Florida Atlantic, Louisville and California.
23 - That's the total number of points allowed by the WVU defense through three games. It's the best scoring defense start by the Mountaineers since 1996, when WVU beat Pitt 34-0, Western Michigan 34-9 and East Carolina 10-9 for a three-game total of 16 points. That team started the season 7-0 and finished 8-4.
26 - While the Mountaineers' defense is tops in scoring, the yardage isn't. In fact, WVU is No. 26 in total defense, having yielded 307.3 per game. Those yards are split nearly even between rushing (460) and passing (462).
29 - West Virginia and Oklahoma are two of 29 undefeated teams left in the Football Bowl Subdivision, although that number will dwindle this weekend. Four other games feature two undefeated teams: Ohio State-Indiana; Kansas State-Oklahoma State; Mississippi-Florida; Notre Dame-Clemson.
37 - The number of ballots on which West Virginia appeared this week. That's a sharp uptick from 11 of a week ago and one in the preseason. Although the Mountaineers didn't appear on 24 of 61 possible media ballots, one voter, Savannah Morning News sprotswriter Nathan Deen, ranked WVU at 14. Of course, Deen covers Georgia Southern, the Mountaineers' opening opponent.
40 - The last time WVU opened the season with three consecutive 40-plus performances: 2007. That season, the Mountaineers beat Marshall 42-10, Eastern Washington 52-3 and Maryland 45-24.
92 - That was the last time WVU played four consecutive ranked opponents, also all within the month of October. That season, WVU played No. 22 Boston College, No. 14 Syracuse, No. 14 Penn State and No. 1 Miami in succession. It could happen again this month if all four opponents stay in the top 25. WVU plays at No. 15 Oklahoma this week, and the next three opponents are in this week's AP poll: No. 20 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Baylor and No. 4 TCU.
