Throttle Throbs Car Club has awarded four scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to Greenbrier County students. Those receiving scholarships were:
Greenbrier West High School: Madison Copenhaver, of Rupert, and Dakota McClung, of Hines.
Greenbrier East High School: Kristie McKenna and Jamie Nickell, both of Lewisburg.
The scholarships are in memory of Greg Carter, a Greenbrier County fireman who lost his life in the line of duty.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced approximately 900 additional winners of the National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join more than 3,200 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in June.
Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners among the finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Catherine Cornell
Catherine "Kitty" Taormina Cornell, 85, of South Charleston, passed away in her home on July 27, 2017, comfortably and quietly, following a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Cornell.
Kitty was born October 27, 1931, in Binghamton, NY, where she was raised and attended high school. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan, and she was a life-long member of the Chi Omega sorority. Upon graduation, she taught grade school in Michigan for several years before moving to South Charleston in 1959. Thereafter, she taught throughout the Kanawha Valley for many years and tutored students in the French language, which she loved.
She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and she truly loved her Lord, family, friends, and fellow parishioners. Over the years she participated in many charitable and volunteer endeavors, most recently assisting others with their tax preparation. These and many other activities provided her with much joy and many friendships over the years.
She is survived by her five children: David Cornell (Lisa) of St. Petersburg, FL; Joseph Cornell (Jenny) of Pocatello, ID; Lisa Cornell of Huntington; John Cornell (Meredith) of Huntington; and Brian Cornell of South Charleston; and seven grandchildren - Hilary (Jesse), William, Dean, Alexandra, Catherine, Holden, and Nathan.
A memorial Mass will be held at noon Monday, August 14, at Blessed Sacrament (South Charleston). Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. at the church prior to Mass. Cremation services are being provided by Affordable Cremations of WV.
James "Pug" Copen
James E Copen, "Pug," 75, of Elkview, passed away on July 21, 2017, peacefully at home after a long battle with cancer. He was retired from the Plumber & Pipefitters Union #625. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and tinkering with old vehicles. He will be sadly missed by family and everyone that knew him.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Jack and Susie (mother "Toot") Copen.
Surviving are his sons, James E. Copen Jr. "JC" of Elkview, Joseph (Nicole) of Amma; daughter, Merla (James) Prowse of Elkview; brother, Steve (Jeannie) of Elkview; sisters, Peggy Endres of Elgin, Texas, Patricia (David) Mabry of Elgin, Jackie (James) Mabry of Elgin; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and finally, his dog and best friend, Buddy.
In keeping with our father's wishes, his body was cremated and a private memorial service will be held later. Memorial donations can be made in Pug's honor to St Jude's Children's Hospital.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael S. Beasley at Ear Nose & Throat for his kind generosity and care of our father during his extended illness. Also to Barlow and Bonsall Funeral Home for handling the arrangements.
Betty "Mae" Clendenin
Betty Mae Clendenin, 89, of Poca, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017, at home.
Betty was a member of the Red Hat Society, she was a board member and enjoyed helping with activities at Cross Lanes Unity. She also loved spending time with her family and playing bingo whenever she could.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband Howard "Nappy" Clendenin, sons Kelley and Jack, and daughter Martha McClanahan.
She is survived by her grandchildren Robert Clendenin, Darren McClanahan, John Clendenin, Jackie Justice, Stacy and husband Wayne Arthur, and Renae Shingleton; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a host of other family and friends.
A tribute to the life of Betty will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, at Heizer Creek Community Church with Pastor John Taylor officiating. Friends may visit at the church one hour prior to service at the church.

Roselle G. Clemons, 80, of South Charleston, passed away Friday, July 18, 2017. She was born April 8, 1937, in Williamson.
She is survived by her loving husband, Joseph; son, Brandon Joseph Clemons; sisters, Doretha Smith and Brenda Helm; brother, Malcolm S. Goolsby Jr.; and other family members and many friends.

Glenn Robert Wilson
Glenn Robert Wilson, 69, of South Charleston, WV, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2017, at home of natural causes.
Glenn enlisted in the United States Army in Cambridge, Ohio, and served as a meat inspector in Nashville and Chicago. He graduated from The Ohio State University and obtained a master's degree from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. Glenn dedicated his life improving the lives of people with vision impairments. He worked as a teacher of blind and partially sighted students for Kanawha County Schools, Putnam County Schools, and West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services. Glenn saw himself as a teacher of computer skills and openly shared his talents with anyone who asked. In retirement, Glenn became an avid golfer and played the best round of his life the day before he died. He also enjoyed genealogy, renovation projects, researching everything, mystery novels, photography, and traveling to visit family/friends.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Glenn Wilson and Martha Rachel Knight Wilson, brother Walter William Wilson, niece Jennifer Cortney Holdren, and brother-in-law Randy Scott Flowers.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Joan Marie Kaul Wilson; his children, Marie Rachel Lenhardt, Ian Robert Wilson and Sean Ryan Wilson; his grandsons, Aiden, Connor, Colin and Micah; his soon to be born granddaughter; his sisters, Jean Marie Ainsco and Adele Rachel Flowers.
The Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Glenn Robert Wilson will be held at noon Tuesday, August 1, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in South Charleston by Fr. Leon Alexander; friends may call one hour before Mass. A viewing will be held Monday, July 31, at Snodgrass Funeral Home in South Charleston from 6 to 8 p.m.

Gerald "Kenny" Ryan
Gerald "Kenny" Ryan, 80, of Alum Creek, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 28, 2017.
He was a 1954 graduate of Duval High School, where he loved and played in all sports. Kenny retired from FMC with 35 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his son, Mark; parents, Fred and Flossie Ryan; brothers, Curtis and Eugene; sisters, Iola, Lois, Gertrude and Ada.
Kenny is survived by special friend, Lois Harper; daughter, Marilyn Preston; grandchildren, Melinda Stanley and Chris Preston; sister, Lou Cassle; and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Chester Bird and Oshel Bell officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date in the Mays Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Phylis Ann Reed
Phyllis Ann Reed, age 65, of Rootstown, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2017, at Akron General Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Lawrence Daniel Reed of 46 years.
Phyllis was born in Sutton,W.Va., on July 3, 1952. She was born to the late Bennie and Lora Carter. Phyllis was a homemaker and loving mother to six children whom, later blessed her with 16 grandchildren. She enjoyed her flowers, reading, and spending time with her family and friends, which she held very dear to her heart. She was member of the Hill Church, in Brimfield, Ohio.
Besides her husband, Lawrence (Daniel), Phyllis leaves behind her six children; Angie (Gene) Marquez, Las Vegas, Nev., Christopher (Cheryl) Reed, Mogadore, Ohio, Lisa (Bill) Decker, Rootstown, Ohio, Jennifer (Jeff) Fahl, Kent, Ohio, Amanda Reed (Alex Martinez) Rootstown Ohio, and Michael Reed (Candace Donell) of Edinburg Ohio, as well as 16 grandchildren; Cory, Steven, Morgan, Carissa, Kayla, Brandon, Alaina, Dillon, Marlie, Kendra, Kane, Peyton, Owen, Abby, Alexa and Xander.
Calling hours will Tuesday August 1, from 5 p.m., until time of funeral services at 7 p.m., at the Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Homes Ravenna Chapel. Pastor Jeremy Walden will be officiating the services. Committal services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, August 3, at the Perry James Memorial Park in Frametown, W.Va. Travis Ray Kinser
Travis Ray Kinser, 28, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away, Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at his home. Travis was born in Charleston, July 19, 1989, to Robert Earl Kinser and Lisa Gail Kinser.
He graduated from Riverside High School with honors in 2007, and also from Carver Career Center, with a Respiratory Therapy degree. He worked at CAMC Memorial while working on a Bachelor's of Science degree at WVSU. He then went on to graduate from Carlow University as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist. Travis was employed with TriHealth at Bethesda and Good Samaritan Hospitals in Cincinnati. He was a member of Big Bottom Missionary Baptist Church where he was raised, born again and baptized.
He loved spending time with his family and friends. Travis would never say a hurtful word to anyone. He was kind hearted with a gentle soul, that radiated through his quirky little smile and sparkling baby blue eyes. He was respectful, and respected in his professional life, as well as his personal life. He was well known for being an avid outdoorsman and an experienced bass angler. He loved spending many hours on the lakes, rivers, and in the woods, hunting and fishing.
Travis is preceded in death by his father, Robert Earl Kinser; grandparents, Marjorie (Earl) Kinser and Anna Faye Kees;
He is survived by his mother, Lisa; brother, Dustin (Britany) Kinser; girlfriend, Brittany Nickell and son, Troy; Grandfather, Clifford (Becky) Kees; aunts, Kimberly (Jeff) Wentz and Kathy (Jim) Browning; niece, Khloe Kinser; cousins, Adam and Eric Wentz and Brandon and Cody Browning.
The funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, August 2, at Spring Fork Missionary Baptist Church, Campbells Creek, with the Rev. Fred Christian and Rev. Mike Long officiating. The burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Clarence Hagen Huckaby, 83, of Loudendale, died Saturday, July 29, 2017, at home. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston. The family will receive friends two hours to the service at the mortuary.
Marcella "Marci" (Gritt) Hall
Marcella Anne "Marci" Gritt Hall, 79, of Charles Town, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at her home. She was born June 23, 1938 in Buffalo, W.Va., to Nidre Lay "Doc" and Hester Frances Lunsford Gritt. Formerly of Bristow, she was a homemaker and a wonderful mother of four children.
Marci is survived by her sons Roger Lee (wife Bonnie) Hall, Walter Hall, and Mark Hall; brothers Frank (wife Charlotte) Gritt of Poca, Don Ray (wife Brenda) Gritt of Leon, Marty (wife Joan) Gritt of Red House, Jimmy (wife Kim) Cunningham of Cross Lanes; sisters Imogene Hunter of Columbus, Ohio, Marie Beller of Buffalo, and Lea Ann (husband Steve) Blackshire of Buffalo; and grandsons Roger and Nicholas Hall. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Debra Anne Hall.
Friends joined the family for visitation on Saturday, July 29, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home. Funeral Services to celebrate Marci's life were held on Sunday at 2 p.m., at the Funeral Home, with Rev. Brandon Moll officiating. Interment followed in Hall Family Cemetery, Guardian.
